Fun & Games: Learning Activities for Kids to Try At Home

Teaching your kid the basics of phonics doesn’t have to be boring. To get your little one excited, opt for games, such as letter hunts, DIY alphabet books, or the shaving cream writing activity. Similarly, you can also take this a step further by taking them on a book shopping trip. However, make sure you let your kid pick out an age-appropriate book that they like. Read this book with them before tucking them in for the night. This will help instill good reading habits in your kid and help them learn phonics easily.

Counting

Just teaching your kid how to recite the numbers in the correct order isn’t enough. Take this a step further by using objects. For instance, to teach your kid about counting 2 items, use 2 crayons. Similarly, theorists like Vygotsky have argued about the importance of using a hands-on approach to teach kids about learning concepts such as counting. So make sure to let your kid touch any object they’re counting. This will help your kid connect ideas that they learn to real-life situations.

Penmanship

Good writing skills will take your kid a long way. Ditch the traditional pencil to paper approach in favor of unconventional ones. Let your kid practice writing via tracing and the connect-the-dots approach. You can also use Play-Doh in various colors to shape the alphabets and numbers.

Keep in mind that if you have a preschooler, invest time in teaching them the motions of the letters. On the other hand, for a school-going kid, schedule daily writing tasks to improve their writing skills.

Science Experiments

You don’t need to have a science laboratory to teach your kid about science. Instead, bring science home by undertaking simple experiments. For instance, show your kid what’s inside a penny by using lemon juice. Or use rainbow baking soda and vinegar to create fizzy rainbows. In short, don’t be afraid to try fun science experiments to intrigue young minds.
