Ensuring their child’s academic development is every parent’s concern. No matter what age our children are, we all want the best for them. However, studies show that creating good study habits during a child’s early years benefits them long term.

Learn some ways of ensuring academic development while working with their child care center.

  1. Read To Your Child

If you have an infant or a toddler, it’s the best time to introduce them to books. Start encouraging your child to read by reading out to them—we cannot emphasize the importance of reading enough.

You might be wondering what the point of doing that at such a young age is. Even if they can’t read yet, you can still get them familiarized with books, which is a great way to encourage reading.

Sit down to read with your child for at least 30 minutes daily and allow them to choose a book they like. Read out loud and help them read with you. Explain the meanings of different words and help them understand the characters and story. This will increase their vocabulary and comprehension skills, ensuring academic development in the long run.

  1. Prioritize Goals Over Grades

We often set goals to achieve immediate results such as good grades. However, ensuring academic development is a lot more than focusing on the results; it’s also about the process involved to attain those results.

Saying “I want straight As this academic year” isn’t always effective in helping your child achieve desirable grades. Instead, help them set more specific goals such as what they will do to achieve straight As in their current academic year.

Perhaps a better approach would be to introduce your child to an action plan — “I will help you revise all that you learned in class for an hour every day to get straight As”. Now, this is a goal that is practical and achievable. It also provides the child direction on how to study well. Once you set goals that are easy to achieve on a regular basis, the results are bound to be positive.

  1. Be Regular at Parent-Teacher Meetings

As a parent, you must work with their child care center actively. Whether you have a kindergartener or a 6th grader, it’s important to be in touch with the center’s staff. That includes attending parent-teacher conferences, academic year events, and more.

This is a great way to get to know the child care center’s management and teachers. Moreover, if your child has any specific learning requirements, you can figure out a way to tackle any issues they’re facing. You can also ensure your child is in a safe and caring environment that focuses on providing individual attention.

This can ensure you’re staying on top of the game at ensuring academic development for your child.
