Have you see a toddler open up a huge present and then get invested in playing with the box, rather than the gift? Children love imaginative play and large boxes, toy cars, trucks, tea sets, etc. all allow them to create a magical world of their own. The box can transform into a spaceship, race, car, or even a demolition vehicle for them. Imaginative play is truly amazing and it shows off their creativity. Never prevent them from imaginative play as it has many benefits:

Improves the development of social and emotional skills

During playtime, children actively experiment with the social and emotional roles in life. Imaginative play means that they walk in someone else’s shoes, allowing them with moral development and developing empathy. Imaginative play encourages your child to step beyond the world where they play usually, to one that allows them to engage with others.

Language skills

Pretend play makes children experiment and understand the power of language better. Children use words and phrases they typically hear adults say around them. They imitate others during language play which is a great way for them to polish their language skills without even knowing it! During imaginative play, they also create or reenact stories, helping them make valuable connections between spoken and written language.

Improves thinking skills

During imaginative play children begin to solve problems as they come along. To make their imaginative play a reality they need to make do with things they have around the home. Let’s say they want to recreate a space ship, they will probably use a big space cardboard box and draw on it. This is a prime example of thinking and problem solving skills. Practicing this can make it easier for them to solve issues when they grow up. They will always look for new and unique ways to effectively deal with a problem.
