Childhood is quite a complex time for parents and children. Children develop at a rapid rate when younger and parents can find it difficult to navigate their way. You must have heard about fellow parents talk about the “terrible twos” where toddlers bounce between the reliance on their parents and want a taste of independence. This stage is known to be quite difficult, particularly since parents are working around the clock.

It’s essential to observe and understand your child’s behavior. There are a few common behavioral issues children tend to develop. Here’s how you can deal with them:

Pretending to not hear you

One of the most frustrating things for parents is having to tell their child the same thing multiple times. Repeating these instructions to your child gets them used to being given reminders, instead of completing the task when required. When your child pretends to ignore you, walk over to them and speak directly to them. Having eye contact means they don’t have a choice but to listen. If they still choose to ignore you, impose a consequence like reduced time on the tablet.

Exaggerating

Children have an active imagination, and while it’s good for them to speak about what they would like to do and where they would like to go, pick up on statements that are untrue. If your child is claiming that they have gone to Disney world to their friends or teachers, while the trip hasn’t even happened yet, speak to your child about their statement. Let them know that you will visit eventually, but lying about it isn’t alright. Some parents also tell their children about the boy who cried wolf to make them understand that bluffing is never the answer.

Displaying an attitude

When you notice your child developing a bit of a bad attitude towards everything, it’s time to intervene. Make sure your child understands the specifics about behavior that is and isn’t acceptable. If they often throw tantrums and display aggressive behavior, let them know that you will only speak to them once they speak politely to you.
